1979 - 1983
Toward the end of the run of the 1979 base, it appears that the A-series New Car Dealer and B-series Used Car Dealer plates were running out of numbers, and since the 1979 base was not being replaced by the new 1984 series, it was decided that, starting in 1984, all Dealer types would be merged into a single serial format. It appears that 1984 plates used the few remaining A- & B-series numbers leftover from the 1979 base and then moved into the D-series, and likely started where the 1979 base D-series Tractor Dealer left off.
As the now-generic Dealer plates progressed from the D-series into the E-series, the E-series would have started above where the E-series Trailer plates left off on the 1979 base. Then as the E-series filled up, the progression expanded into the F-series which had not previously been used. The F-series ran at least as high as the F88-000F series.
It is believed that no C-series (previously used for MV Business) were issued on the 1984 base, and it is believed that no G-series plates were ever issued.

1999 - 2023
In 2022, PennDOT announced that it would replace all Dealer plate types. The plates would be redesigned to match the "Family of Plates" style and the serial formats were changed from non-traditional formats to a standardized format, such as "TD0000D" for Trailer Dealer, now "T/D 20001."
Plate types to be replaced: Dealer (to be split into two types: New Car Dealer and Pre-Owned Car Dealer), Multi-Purpose Dealer, Farm Equipment Dealer, Trailer Dealer, Repair Towing, Salvage Yard, Transporter, Repossessor, Watercraft Trailer Dealer, Motorcycle Dealer, and Moped Dealer.
