Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: just one, the new Preserve Our Heritage plate. Keep them coming!

NEW PLATES ALERT! Three new plates will soon hit Pennsylvania roads: Friends of Washington Crossing Park, Communications Workers of America, and American Legion Auxiliary. It should be noted that American Legion Auxiliary is a different type than the existing American Legion type. Keep your eyes peeled!

Here are a few new highs for the Action for Animals Humane Society and Combat Medical Badge plate types from Bruce Bufalini and James Ruppert, respectively. This is the first numbered Combat Medical Badge plate on the map outline format. Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

Here are three plate types that are still being issued on the 1999 WWW base but now have PennDOT mock-ups on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: United Bowhunters of PA, Kings College (formerly "King's College"), and Lafayette College. It seems that some types may skip the Visa base entirely and go straight to the "Let Freedom Ring" base.

Last up this week is a neat spot by Nick Tsilakis: an Amateur Radio plate that ends in "2", signifying a second plate with the same call sign, often for a spouse or second vehicle. Sometimes there is a dash before the "2" but sometimes not. These are few and far between but always fun to spot one!

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Operation Enduring Freedom and Omnibus. Thanks to Richard Than and Bruce Bufalini for the pictures - keep them coming!

END OF AN ERA - Well it's official: the run of the full-size Railroad graphic plate is coming to an end and will be replaced by this plate featuring an image of a bank barn. The Railroad plate was the last full-size graphic plate to be issued as the state transitioned to the "Family of Plates" style, the design language with a small graphic to the left. The bank barn was and is a staple in Pennsylvania, especially in the Pennsylvania Dutch areas such as southeastern and central Pennsylvania. The Preserve Our Heritage legend remains.

Richard Than submits this perfect shot of a Notary Public plate. As you probably surmised, these can be ordered by Notaries within the Commonwealth to tell everyone they are a Notary. As you can see, it's still on the WWW base, one of a handful of plate types that are still actively being issued on that base AND it's new high! Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

Matt Ciecka sends in this picture of a personalized Temple University Alumni plate on the Visa base with the map outline graphic. This is a "first-of" for this site - thanks Matt!

Last but not lease, Bill Stephens sends in this picture of a Municipal Motorcycle plate, a very tough one to spot in the wild. Bill actually grabbed this image from a Facebook group about happenings in the Lehigh Valley; the ability to source images and information from multiple sources without leaving the comfort of your home is certainly one positive about social media, and certainly has helped this site over the years.

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Let Freedom Ring and National Ski Patrol. Thanks to John Clark and Adam R. (via Noah Foster) for the pictures - keep them coming!

This site has received several pictures of the Flyers Charities plate type on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base but this one, sent in by Noel Torchio, is the first high-quality one. As we have said in the past, we appreciate all submissions but we also make photo upgrades when possible.

We spotted this new high for the St. James Alumni plate type. This is yet another plate type that is still being issued on the WWW base which first debuted in 1999! Our working theory is that there are still many of these plates on this base sitting in the PennDOT warehouse and PennDOT is issuing them until they run out. According to a recent warehouse inventory report, plate numbers through S/J 11199 are in stock, so it's likely that a new base will begin at S/J 11200 - stay tuned! Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

Jaska Börner sends in this picture of a Virginia Tech plate. This site has a picture of a personalized plate of this type on the new base but this is our first picture of a numbered plate on the new base.

And now for something COMPLETELY different, we have this 1937 Passenger plate, sent in by Chris Zavatski. At first glance is looks like a normal 1937 Passenger plate, but if you click the link here, you will see that a small run of 1937 Passenger plates had keystones flanking the "1937 PENNA".

4/12/2026 Posting

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Westminster College and Elle's Angels Foundation. Thanks to John Clark for the pictures - keep them coming!

Here's a new high for the Gettysburg 1863 plate type, sent in by Bruce Sakson. Back on March 22, 2026 we posted that this type transitioned to the new base for personalized plates, but PennDOT appears to still have an inventory of numbered plates. It's uncertain how long PennDOT plans to issue WWW and Visa plates still in their inventory before a hard stop to switch to Let Freedom Ring. Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

John Kerestes sends in this picture of a personalized International Association of Fire Fighters. This is a "first-of" for this site, plus it's always nice to see a plate with just a few characters on it!

Recently there were two sample plates on eBay for plate types that never made it to production. There are a number of plate types that fit that description, this site currently does not have a section for those types but may in the future. Thanks to John McDevitt and "licenseplatekingcompany" for the pictures.

Last up this week is a perfect image of a Motorcycle plate on the new LFR base, courtesy of Devan Ciemiewicz. We always appreciate submissions to this site, especially when the picture is this good!

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Lehigh University Alumni and Ohio State Alumni. Thanks to John Clark for the pictures - keep them coming!

A 1999 memo from PennDOT to auto tags stores has been located and is now available on the Documents (Reference) page, located on the Defunct Types, Special Event Plates, Etc. page.

Here's a new high for a plate type that still has not made the transition to the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Steel Worker. Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs, and thanks to Bruce Sakson for providing the picture!

We are lucky to have an amazing community of PA plate collectors and enthusiasts. One of the byproducts of that is that this site sometimes gets so many submissions that several weeks elapse before we can get around to "your" picture. Here are three recent pictures of PA Sportsman plates. The left picture, from Bruce Sakson, is a new high for the Visa base; the center picture, from Dillon Hornberger, is the first plate observed on the new base; and the right picture, from Mike Laick, is a nice-looking personalized version on the new base. We are very grateful for your submissions, please keep them coming!

Last but not least we have this beautiful pair of Judiciary (Defunct Types, Special Event Plates, Etc. page) plates from Jeff Lesher. This plate type began in 1928 and was issued through 1935. Judges did not get their own plates again until the 1990s. The 123-J format carried over into 1929 but plates issued later that year bore the format shown in the image on the right - click the link to see more.

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: NRA Foundation and Bucknell University. Thanks to Zach Parr and John Clark for the pictures - keep them coming!

Brayden Harnish shares this "first-of" sighting of a Alliance Fire and Rescue Services, Inc. plate. This plate type was first announced on this site back in January 2024 so this is a great score - thanks Brayden!

Last week we featured a pair of State Representative plates from John Anshant, illustrating the two serial formats for legislative plates during this era. This week we have a similar pair of State Senator plates, also from John Anshant. You may be thinking, "But wait a minute, there were only 50 senatorial districts during this era!" It's believed that numbers over 50 were for retired Senators. This is a fairly rare find, thanks John!

Here's a new high for the Teen Driver plate type from Bruce Sakson. As you can see, these are still being issued on the Visa base, probably because a large quantity was produced on that base and the demand has not been as strong as expected. Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

Last up this week is a Civil Defense plate for Venango County. The number "61" indicates that it is for Venango County and this county is a "first-of" for this site. Thank you to eBay user "License Plate Deals" for the image.

3/22/2026 Posting

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Distracted Driving Awareness (personalized) and Gettysburg 1863 (personalized). Thanks to Aaron Paynkewicz and Zach Parr for the pictures - keep them coming!

Thanks goes to John Clark for spotting this "first-of" Woman Veteran plate (left picture)! Days later, Aaron Shirk sent in the picture on the right. This plate type was announced in 2024 when the Visa base was still being issued; two years later we now have two pictures of this plate but no pictures on the Visa base! Keep your eyes peeled!

Here's a new high for the U.S. Marine Corps Veteran plate type, sent in by Charles Sweitzer. Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

This pair of State Representative plates, from John Anshant, illustrates the two serial formats for legislative plates during this era. It's believed that the "HR-1" format was the primary format and "1-HR" was issued for a second vehicle belonging to that legislator.

This awesome set of Snowmobile Dealer validation stickers comes from Robert Stout. This type started out as a license plate in 1974 and transitioned to stickers in 1975. No stickers are known past 2005. Please contact us if you can fill in any of the gaps, click the "Snowmobile Dealer" link to see more.

3/15/2026 Posting

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Motor Home and Taxi. Thanks to Jeffrey Henry and Evan John for the pictures - keep them coming!

eBay user "Heart & Hollert Thrift" recently offered this NOS U.S. Marine Reserve plate for auction. As you may notice, it has the "You've Got a Friend In"-style "Pennsylvania" which narrows down the issuanace date a bit. This plate type is seldom spotted on PA roads today.

Here's a new high for the East Allen Township Volunteer Fire Department plate type, sent in by John Clark. Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

John Clark also sends in these two plates which appear to be test plates or plates made up just for fun. If you have any more information on these plates, or if you'd like to submit any one-off plates you may have or know about, please contact us!

Lastly we have this beautiful 1914 Motorcycle plate from Koby Vinokor. This was the first year that motorcycles had their own dedicated plate/plate type. Back in this era, plate length varied on how long the serial was; for this year and type, lengths varied from 6" to 8 3/4"! Click on the "Motorcycle" link to see more.

3/8/2026 Posting

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: California University and Woman Veteran. Thanks to Brendan Sherry and John Clark for the pictures - keep them coming!

Koby Vinokor shares this beautiful Sewickley Pre-State plate from 1909. The Commonwealth began issuing plates at the state level in 1906 so it is unknown why this Pittsburgh-area town was still issuing their own license plates three years later. This plate is very small, measuring 3" x 5".

Here's a new high for the Disabled Veteran (Severe Disability) plate type. Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

Randy Czankner Jr. sends in this pair of Classic Car/Vehicle plates. As you can see, his existing Classic Car number was remade on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base. Thanks for the photos, Randy!

Last up this week we have this previously unknown format for the very elusive Watercraft Trailer/Dealer plate type, as seen on eBay from seller "Heart & Hollert Thrift." Until now, the highest number observed on this base was "WD-00038" and formatted just like that, with a dash separator. The plate pictured is the first observed plate on this base without a separator.

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Philadelphia Fire Fighters' Union (personalized). Thanks to Noah Foster and Matt Ciecka for the pictures - keep them coming!

NEW PLATES ALERT! Our own John McDevitt shares that dlivrd Difference and Middletown Volunteer Fire Department will soon have their own plates. Keep your eyes peeled!

Jeff Lesher shares this picture-perfect shot of a Blue Star Family plate. A Blue Star Family is a family who has a relative actively serving in the military. This picture is a much needed update for this website, thanks Jeff!

Chuck Harrington sends in this nice looking number "2" personalized Blue Knights Intl Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club plate. This is one of a handful of special organization plates where the plate legend is so long that it's barely legible.

Lastly we have this 1951 3-axle Truck plate, seen on eBay from seller "scottketch71". The giveaway that it's a 3-axle truck is the double letter prefix with a "Z" as the second letter. The history of Pennsylvania Truck plates is complicated to say the least. If you click on the "Truck" link you will be able to see just how complicated designations get, especially starting in the late 1940s.

2/22/2026 Posting

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Mario Lemieux Foundation and Presque Isle Partnership. Thanks to Dillon Hornberger and Bruce Bufalini for the pictures - keep them coming!

NOTE: PennDOT recently released a prototype image for the Presque Isle Partnership showing an updated logo, see below. This is the first plate type on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base to have more than one format on the new base!

NEW PLATE ALERT! John Clark informed us that the Fairmount Rowing Association will soon have its own plate. Keep your eyes peeled!

This blue base Repossessor plate comes from an eBay listing (user "tugboat1980") and is only the second observed plate on this format. As always, click the link to see a complete history of the plate type.

James Ruppert sends in this "first-of" image of a personalized Limerick Fire Department plate. A numbered version of this plate type on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base was first observed in October 2025.

Last up this week, another "first-of" for this website: a Prince Hall F&AM plate with the map outline in place of the sticker well. Thanks to Richard Than for the find!

2/15/2026 Posting

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Lancaster Bible College and The Video Game Clubs of America. It should be noted that this is the first image of a Lancaster Bible College plate, despite the plate type first being announced on this site exactly 11 years ago on February 15, 2015. Thanks to John Clark for the pictures - keep them coming!

Jeffrey Henry sends in this picture of a personalized Conserve Wild Resources plate, a "first-of" for this site. Thanks Jeffrey!

Here is a new high for this base of the School Bus plate type, thanks to eBay user "lenzstuff". This plate type was printed on this base from the early 1990s to about 2000, when the general replate was done to the "WWW" base.

Someone who goes by "Tuscarora Antiques" spotted this picture of an Arizona State University plate which is a previously unknown format (no sticker well!) What's more curious is that the legend adds "ALUMNI ASSN" which is exclusive to this format. There's always something new to learn about PA plates!

Lastly this week is a new high for 1945 Motorbike plates. This type started in 1920 and eventually became "Moped". On this site those two types are consolidated into the one page that is linked here. This image comes from eBay user "jrkohr".

2/8/2026 Posting

This week is the first week since September 14, 2025 to not have any new plates types spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base. This breaks a 21-week streak! Ahh! Keep your eyes peeled out there!

This shot of a Motorcycle Dealer plate from Zach Bent is not a new high but is a great quality picture to feature! As we have remarked before, we can't always get a good picture but it's nice when we do!

James Ruppert shares this picture of a Penn Alumni plate without a sticker well. This was a transitional format between plates with sticker wells and plates with the map outline where the sticker well used to be. This site has a picture of a personalized plate on this format but this is the first picture of a numbered plate on this format, which helps further tighten up changeover points for serial ranges. Thanks James!

Here's a new high for the Person With Disability plate type, sent in by Aaron Shirk. NOTE: We were told by a PennDOT employee that the "Person with Disability" legend was to change to "Let Freedom Ring" at the end of 2025. None of these have been observed so far so keep your eyes peeled, and always be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

Last up this week (left image, from eBay) appears to be a low number 1933 Motorcycle plate but it's actually part of the second serial format. The first plate was number "1" and went through "9999", then "A1" through "A999", then "B1", etc. The highest observed number for this year is "B486". One quirky thing about 1933 Motorcycle plates is that the "33" and "PA" moved from the left side of the plate to the right side (see right image, from Jeff Lesher). As always, click the link to see a complete history for all years!

2/1/2026 Posting

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and Waynesburg University. Thanks to John Clark for the pictures - keep them coming!

NOTE: A prototype image from PennDOT exists for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix type with an updated logo (picture below). None have been observed to-date. Please keep your eyes out for one, as this site is in need of an image.

NEW PLATE ALERT! Our own John McDevitt shares that the Eagles Autism Foundation will soon have an organizational plate! Keep your eyes peeled for this one!

Chris Van Zandt sends in this shot of plate number 4 on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base! This number has been photographed on several bases over the years: the second picture, from an anonymous contributor, on the Visa base and the third picture, from Tom Perri, on the "WWW" base. This is classified as a vanity/personalized plate, which can be found under the "Personalized Plate" column of the Passenger page of this website.

After doing some digging, we finally have a decent image of the Municipal Motorcycle plate type on the Visa base. PennDOT first put out a prototype image of this type on the Visa base back in 2017 and the first time one was observed in the wild was in January 2024 by John Fedorchak (third picture). Another pair of Municipal MC plates was observed on the Facebook page for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police (fourth picture). More recently we received a new high of "M/G 43G" from Ben Vaughn (second picture). This is what is so wonderful about this website, the community of plate lovers who can pool their resources to get the most complete and accurate website possible! Remember to click on each picture to see a larger version, and as always make sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

Lastly we have this Civil Defense plate for a previously undocumented county number (county #41 is Lycoming County). Per the plate type page of this website, "These undated plates were issued during the Cold War era. Plates were issued by the State Office of Civil Defense, today known as the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency or PEMA, and were distributed by PA's 67 counties. Plates were front mounted on vehicles, and were given to people who had a role in civil defense. The first part of the plate number represents the county code, the second part is the plate serial number, all are undated. It has been suggested that not all counties issued these plates."

Just one new sighting to report this week of a plate that's transitioned to the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Flyers Charities. Thanks to Mike Sava for the picture - keep them coming!

The Cabin Fever Auctions website shows this picture of a repainted 1916 Tractor plate. This type started in 1914 (!) on porcelain and transitioned to steel in 1916. The "E" prefix stands for Engine, which later became "TE" for "Traction Engine." This is also a new high for this year. This type is no longer issued so you can find this type on this website under "List of All Plates & Current Highs" (button at the top of this page) and then "Defunct, Special Event, & Misc."

On the same "Defunct, Special Event, & Misc." page, you can also find this next plate: a Pennsylvania Farm Show plate for the 2026 show. The only other year that a plate for this event has been spotted was for 2025, also spotted by John Clark.

Here's a new high for the PennDOT Official Use (Non-Commercial) plate type from John Clark. There are a few Official plate types and most have a Commercial and Non-Commercial variety. See the page for more information, and be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs!

Last up this week is a very rare one to see out and about: a Lincoln University (Official Use) plate, spotted by yours truly. Lincoln University is located in - you guessed it - Lincoln University, PA, which is in Chester County just past Kennett Square. The campus recently installed security gates so it's a challenge to drive around the parking lot to spot these plates. This one was spotted in Wilmington, Delaware.

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal (personalized), Pennsylvania Coal Alliance, Inc., and International Association of Fire Fighters. Thanks to Aaron Shirk, Jeff Lesher, and Nick Keck for the pictures - keep them coming!

Glenn Reis shares this picture of his number "70" Antique/Historic plate. This type started in 1956 at number "1" on the purple base shown here, then transitioned to the Visa base in 2005, then finally to the current "Let Freedom Ring" base in mid-2025.

Aaron Shirk submits this great picture of a personalized Disabled Veteran plate, a "first-of" for this website. This plate type started in 1977 and was on the blue-on-white base for almost 50 years before transitioning to the current "Let Freedom Ring" base (which is still sort of blue-on-white).

Here's a new high for the Pre-Owned Dealer plate type from Aaron Shirk. In 2022, PennDOT announced that all of the Dealer types would be redesigned and part of this redesign split the standard Dealer plate into "New Car Dealer" ("N/D" prefix) and "Pre-Owned Dealer" ("P/R" prefix) types. Be sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs.

Last and possibly least (joke) is this personalized Misericordia University plate from John Kerestes. This particular plate has seen its share of bad weather and is in poor condition, but it's also a format that was previously unknown to this site!

1/11/2026 Posting

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: Appalachian Trail Conservancy, U.S. Air Force Veteran, and Street Rod (personalized). Thanks to Dillon Hornberger, James Ruppert, and Aaron Shirk for the pictures - keep them coming!

We are now in the NDA series for the Passenger type. The Passenger series started at MYR0200 on the new base. Thanks to Aaron Shirk for the picture!

Here is a previously unknown format for the Michigan State Alumni plate type. This was spotted by yours truly in a local drive-thru - glad I stopped there! Click the link to see all observed formats.

Next up is a new high for the Temple University plate type from Matt Boyer. The first time this plate type was observed on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base was in August 2025. Make sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs.

Last but definitely not least is this 1937 Passenger plate from Clayton Moore. Although it may not be immediately apparent, this plate is special. Do you know why? Join the conversation on the Facebook group "Keystone State Plates" to chime in!

1/4/2026 Posting - Happy New Year!

Here is the latest batch of plate types to be spotted on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base: The Colebrookdale Railroad, Organ Donors Save Lives, and Animal Friends (personalized). Thanks to John Clark and Richard Than for the pictures - keep them coming!

Here are two "first-of" sightings, both personalized, for the Washington & Jefferson College and B.P. Order of Elks plate types. Sometimes we can't get a 10-out-of-10 picture but these are both good additions to this site. Thanks goes to Ben Vaughn for both spots!

Here are two more personalized plates and "first-of" spots for this site: a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran plate from Kevin Casciano and a Disabled Veteran (Severe Disability) plate from James Ruppert, both on the new "Let Freedom Ring" base.

Ryan Battin sends in this new high for the Arcadia University plate type. The last time this high was updated? June 2012 - and still on the "www" base! There must be a large inventory at PennDOT of these for this base to still be issued on this base from 1999. Make sure to visit the "List of All Plates & Current Highs" page for a list of all current plates and their highs.

Last up this week is a new high discovered for 1927 Dealer plates. Thanks to user "davidinvirginia" on eBay for the picture! Click the link to see information for every year for this type!
